THE PROBLEM
Establishing a consistent bedtime routine for children is challenging due to various factors, causing parents stress and anxiety and making it hard to assist their children build healthy habits.

CONTEXT
Problem Setting
User Testing
Overall, we tested with three children and two parents. During the user testing, I was responsible for scheduling and moderating all the testing sessions, as well as conducting all user interviews with parents.
Disclaimer: All photos and videos were taken with the parents' permission.
A participant looked at the mascot while the mascot was reading a bedtime story.
Our participant kept interacting with the map instead of following the instructions
Parent misinterpreted the instruction provided by the mascot
HYPOTHESIS
Identifying Assumptions
Theme the experience
The team decided to incorporate Alaska Airlines into our design theme because it allows people to better simulate boarding and traveling experience with a real existing airline that is well-known for its service.
We also used a hotel concierge theme to guide us when prototyping the carry-on early drop off service.
Building the prototype
The team sketched the interfaces we considered necessary for the check-in and carry-on drop-off touchpoints
The team planned out what we wanted to prototype together
The ambitious goals we set for ourselves to do in 24 hours
Prototyping as research
My team used physical prototyping techniques that were cost-effective to iterate on to determine user needs. By observing how people interact with our prototypes, we hope to gain qualitative insights into user behaviors and mental models.
Throughout the process, I was in responsible for structuring the study plan, identifying research objectives, building the prototypes, and conducting semi-structured interviews.
RESEARCH
Desk Research
Researching about positive reinforcement for kids
I first did research on what kinds of things kids enjoy seeing as a motivation to encourage them to do things, and I discovered that children are drawn to bright and colorful things because their brain is still developing a sense of vision.
Built prototypes to test my findings
Because of this finding, I encouraged my team to use a light show as one of the forms in our design to motivate kids, and I created a mini prototype to get a sense of what a light show would look and feel.
Researching about the bathroom space
The team also conducted desk research on a child’s bathroom. We noticed that many households use toilet seats to assist their children with potty training, so we considered developing a child toilet seat that detects when the child sits on a toilet.
Use voice assistance to provide instructions
Since parents often have to instruct their children, the team also decided to use voice assistance to inform the children about the next step and reward them after using the restroom.
More about me
My work style
When I design, I use an iterative approach (since there is no such thing as a “perfect design”) and consider how my design will seem to those who may be harmed by it. I'm interested in understanding not just how to improve a product's user experience, but also how we can use foresight to design ethically, displaying respect for the individual or community.
